Defiance is a science fiction television show developed by Rockne S. O'Bannon, Kevin Murphy and Michael Taylor and produced by Universal Cable Productions and Five and Dime Productions. It ran for three seasons from April 15, 2013 to August 28, 2015.

In 2046, ark hunter Joshua Nolan and his adoptive daughter Irisa Nyira arrive in the town of Defiance, led by newly appointed Mayor Amanda Rosewater, and after saving the town from attack, become part of the town's Lawkeepers. The criminal element in town is led by Datak Tarr who is married to the equally cunning Stahma Tarr. Defiance owes its success to the McCawley Mines run by Rafe McCawley that extracts Gulanite, a powerful mineral created on Earth during the Terraforming. Amanda's sister, Kenya Rosewater, runs the NeedWant, the bar and brothel in town. As Nolan and Irisa deal with threats to the town, including Hellbugs, war criminals, Razor rain storms and plagues, Irisa begins to experience visions that lead her to discover an ancient Votan ship buried beneath the town.

In 2047, the Earth Republic takes control of Defiance following the murder of one of their military leaders. Amanda is running the NeedWant after Kenya's disappearance and the town is led by provisional mayor Niles Pottinger. Datak is in prison due to the murder of the E-Rep military leader and Stahma finds herself running his criminal empire from the shadows. Nolan is searching for Irisa after she disappeared and once reunited she says they must return to Defiance. Reinstated as Lawkeeper after helping the town again, Nolan notices Irisa's strange behavior as people around town begin to go missing.

In 2048, the town finds itself threatened by genocidal Votan general, Rahm Tak, who is cutting a path of death across North America killing any and all Humans he and his troops find and have set their sights on Defiance. A spaceship arrives in orbit and brings the Omec, ancient enemies of the Votans who were believed to have all died with the Votanis System. An alliance is formed between the Omec and Defiance to obtain Gulanite to defend the town. When Rahm Tak is stopped, a new threat emerges when the Omec begin plans to reestablish their ancient tradition of Dread Harvest; where they capture and consume the other races.
